The Sight & Sound ‘greatest films of all time’ poll is often seen as the definitive word on what’s hot and what’s not in cinema history. Now in its eighth year, the poll draws on the views of film critics, curators, programmers and academics to draw up a list of the 100 best films across the history of cinema. The results are often divisive, and the 2022 poll proved no exception. But how do we decide what – and who – matters in film? What makes cinema ‘great’ – and who gets to judge this? This webinar will explore the idea of a canon of film greats and how this connects to ideas about power, representation, nationality, agency and value in film culture past and present.
