I shall review the general field of Mathematical Modelling of infectious diseases. I will describe the general principles of modelling applied to this context and discuss some examples. I will write down equations for the spread of infectious diseases derived from the models and show how they can be solved with the help of a computer. Then, I will describe modelling in the context of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, showing as an application the model that we have designed at Swansea for the study of the evolution of the disease in Wales. This model is used by the Welsh Government to inform measures to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic.
